Wiki o Te Reo Māori and School Holidays

Kia ora koutou

Wiki o Te Reo Māori began  Monday the 14th and continues through to Sunday 20th Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori The Māori Language Commission wants to have one million people to either sing Māori language song, start a meeting with "mōrena" or “kia ora”, or start lunch with a karakia! I will be beginning my commitment by ordering my pango roa, long black, each morning.

We have some fantastic plans in place for the upcoming school holidays. check out the detail in this newsletter. As with many things these days, the plans come with COVID-19 caveat, so please keep an eye on our Facebook page for the latest news.

National Library Initiative

The National Library of New Zealand has released a set of newspaper data from Papers Past for use in research and projects.  Papers Past is a wonderful resource full of historic newspapers, magazines, and other resources created by the National Library, and made available for all.

There are some fantastic 19th century Hawke’s Bay resources in the trial, including the Bush Advocate, Daily Telegraph, Hastings Standard, Hawke’s Bay Herald, Hawke’s Bay Times and Hawke’s Bay Weekly Times.  To get started on your research project here and if you some additional support we are here to help

Recovery Projects Fund

Napier City Council’s Recovery Projects Fund supports projects that will increase Napier’s resilience to the economic impacts of COVID-19. We are keen to receive proposals that focus on direct job creation or generate sustained economic activity. We also welcome proposals from community organisations that create new ways of providing services or develop community resilience and connection.

All registered legal entities that operate in Napier are eligible to apply to this fund. (Excludes family trusts, social clubs and chartered clubs.) Grants may range from under $5,000 to over $30,000. This is not a contestable fund, which means applications will be assessed as they are received until the fund is allocated or by 30 June 2021, whichever comes first. Find out more here

And now for something...old

Weekly we have been enjoying sharing an interesting titbit from our collections. These little gems can be an old photo, newspaper article and lesser-known book. Follow us on Facebook for the latest throwback Thursday post

One of the most popular posts was an aerial photo taken by Whites Aviation on 2 September 1949. The image is part of Napier Library’s Aerial Map Collection.  The photo shows the Napier Park Racecourse, which later became the site of Anderson Park.  Who knew?
