Summer Book Sale
Ever since relocating our Napier Library we’ve been fielding questions about when our next book sale will be, and ever since we’ve moved we’ve had to disappoint you with a “soon, hopefully” while we settled in and found a suitable space. Well, we’ve found a space and it’s on!
All the material won’t fit in at once so we will be restocking regularly, which means it’s well worth checking back every few days.
When: 15 December 2018 until 24 December 2018
Where: Napier Library, MTG Century Theatre Foyer
We’re also going to have a special late night on Thursday 20 December, where we’ll be open until 7pm. So a perfect time to peruse and pick up some great reads.
Why do we have a book sale?
Public library collections are living things and are reflective of community needs today, while still acknowledging the past.
Book sales and “deselecting” items are common practice for libraries across the world. We maintain a ‘steady state’ collection, which means that the number of items added to each year, equals the number of items removed. Reviewing and reassessing resources in the collection is vital and requires a similar level of expertise to that required by selecting. Deselection is an ongoing process in order to maintain collection currency, physical condition, and building capacity. If we did not deselect anything, not only could we be providing out of date information, we would also need to build a new library every seven years!
There can also be multiple copies of popular high volume books. When these books lose their popularity, we reduce the number of these copies.
