Art Deco Collection
The Art Deco collection includes books on the style, architecture, motor vehicles, music, jewellery, art and fashion of the 1930s that characterises much of central Napier.
After Napier’s devastating earthquake and fire of 1931, the city was rebuilt in the style of the 1930s, resulting in a unique architecture that is an integral part of Napier’s culture and heritage. Often referred to as the ‘Art Deco Capital of the World’ visitors stream in from all over the world for it’s hugely popular Art Deco celebrations held each year in February. The Library’s Art Deco collection is utilised strongly at this time as people focus on the clothes, cars and music of the 1930s.
