Summer Reading Programme
Every summer Napier library takes part in the Eastern and Central Summer Reading Programme for Children. This begins in December and goes through until the middle of January. It is for children ages 4 years to 10. years. (Older children may register with the iRead programme).
The Summer Reading Programme aims to encourage and promote books, libraries, and the fun of reading to children through incentive awards, activities, and events. All of this is offered free of charge from libraries in the Eastern and Central Region thanks to the funding of the Eastern and Central Community Trust.
2017/18 Summer Reading registrations begin at 10am on Saturday the 9th of December at your local library.
From Christmas the Napier Library Summer Programme will be at the MTG Hawkes Bay
The Napier Library will soon be moving to a temporary location at MTG Hawke’s Bay (1 Tennyson Street).
Napier Library will be closed from 12 noon, 22nd December 2017 to 7th February 2018 to complete this move. The Taradale Library will operate as normal during this time.
This is how it affects the children’s and teens’ summer programmes 2017-2018…
Summer Reading participants can report-in to Napier Library as usual until the 22nd of December.
On Wednesday the 27th of December the Napier Library Summer Reading programme will begin running at MTG Hawke’s Bay. For the rest of the summer Jessie and Matthew will be available to talk to summer reading participants at the usual times in the education room of the museum. Some of our events will take place here too.
Many of our planned summer entertainments will be held in Asher Hall, behind Saint Paul’s Presbyterian Church. Please refer to your events flier to see where each event is scheduled to be.
How does it Work?
Over the summer participants come into the library, tell us about the books they've read, and receive prizes. Once they have reported-in four or more times they have finished the programme (if they wish) and are invited to our Celebration Finale!
Participants can still take part in the programme if they go away on holiday during this time. They just need to keep reading and recording their books, and report-in when they return. Those holidaying near one of the participating Libraries may report-in there.
